Charlie Adds Symbols at the Crime Scene and Leaves a Message

Hide and Seek

Charlie Adds Symbols at the Crime Scene and Leaves a Message is the act of returning to the house where Ronnie was found and altering its occult imagery. The additions turn an incomplete-looking arrangement into a deliberate message: Charlie paints further symbols around the pentagram and addresses Ronnie by name, unsettling John Rebus before the investigation establishes who is responsible.

Discovery at the House

When Rebus goes back into the living room, he sees that the circles and five-pointed star are still on the wall, but they have been supplemented with zodiac signs and other symbols painted in red between the circles. The paint is still tacky, indicating that the additions are recent. Above the design, a dripping inscription reads HELLO RONNIE.

The new writing produces an immediate change in Rebus’s response to the scene. He is startled by the message and leaves the house without relocking the door. At this point, the inscription’s author and purpose are not yet known to him; its direct address to Ronnie makes the already strange wall seem newly connected to the dead man.

Rebus Identifies the Return

Later, Rebus raises the wall with Charlie during questioning. He explains that someone has added to the pentagram since the crime-scene photographs were taken, and asks Charlie directly whether he was responsible. Charlie nods, confirming Rebus’s suspicion rather than denying that he returned.

Charlie says he entered through a downstairs window. The wooden slats there were so ineffective that the opening functioned like another door, and, as Charlie notes, many people had used it to get into the house. His explanation establishes both the practical route back inside and the house’s prior accessibility; the additions did not require a complicated means of entry.

Charlie’s Purpose and the Message

Asked why he went back, Charlie says the design was not finished and that he wanted to add the symbols. Rebus then connects those additions to the writing on the wall. Charlie confirms that the message was his too, treating it as a greeting: he believed Ronnie’s spirit and soul remained in the house and said he was saying hello.

Charlie also gives the act a more unsettling, human purpose. He had paint left over and thought the inscription might frighten somebody. The explanation therefore does not present the writing solely as an expression of belief: Charlie links it both to his idea of Ronnie’s continued presence and to the effect the message could have on a living viewer. Rebus’s own earlier shock gives that possibility a concrete consequence, though Charlie does not identify a particular intended target.

Significance in the Investigation

The episode separates the supernatural appearance of the wall from the ordinary act that produced it. The signs and greeting can suggest that Ronnie’s presence persists, but Charlie’s admission supplies a human author, a route into the house, and a stated reason for the additions. The message that first intensifies Rebus’s unease becomes evidence of Charlie’s return and of his role in shaping the crime scene’s occult appearance.

The inscription’s address also matters to the investigation’s atmosphere: it names Ronnie, making the wall seem to speak to the dead man while its actual audience is whoever enters the room. Charlie’s account leaves both aspects in view. He describes the greeting as sincere within his belief that Ronnie’s spirit remains, yet acknowledges that he also expected it might frighten someone.
